Mourik Jan ontwerpt en onderhoudt netwerken, vooral met behulp van open source software. Hiermee kunnen gebruiksvriendelijkheide, stabiele en veilige netwerken gerealiseerd worden, die ook nog eens kostenbesparingen opleveren.
Het netwerk van the United Nations University – Maastricht Economic and social Research institute on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT) werd tussen 2000 en 2022 door Mourik Jan onderhouden, en maakte in die periode diverse stadia doorgemaakt: van novell & windows 3.11 naar windows NT4 server/exchange & NT4 workstation. Daarna via samba3 NT4-style (openldap) / scalix & windows XP, naar nu: samba4 Active Directory / SOGo groupware & windows 10, en de connectie naar de Azure cloud, microsoft 365 / office.
Sedert mei 2022 werkt Mourik Jan als Linux Specialist op de Radboud Universiteit in Nijmegen.
